Safety in Cellars
Work Cover
Australia specifies that businesses must ask the question – “what is
the potential risk for harm?” Risk to staff needs to be minimized. This
may involve needing to install panic alarm buttons and have CCTV
coverage to document any incidences where there may be a threat to
people and property.
The introduction
of AS5034 further emphasises the responsibility of employers to ensure
the safety of their staff. For publicans, the dangers of working with
inert gases for beverage dispensing raises the question of; what can I
do to minimize the risk of injury or harm to staff working with gases,
especially in cellars or in areas where people may work alone requiring
additional safety measures?
The incorporation
of a Panic or Duress Button in the area where beverage dispensing
occurs may provide an employee in distress with an opportunity to
quickly and effectively raise an alarm. CCTV surveillance allows the
recording and documentation of all incidences. This may prove highly
valuable should any insurance or public liability claims be filed as
any surveillance will provide an accurate recording of all incidences.
Access Control solutions should also be implemented on all areas where
only authorized personnel should have clearance to enter a specific
room. These are all examples of security measures which can be
implemented by a publican to ensure that as an employer effective
measures have been put in place to maximize the safety of employees.
