WORKPLACE AUTHORITY
The Workplace Authority is one the Federal Government agency responsible for administering the Australia's workplace relations and for lodging workplace agreements. The Workplace Authority assesses whether the workplace agreements pass the Fairness Test.

WORKPLACE OMBUDSMAN
The Workplace Ombudsman is an independent Commonwealth agency responsible for compliance with federal workplace law. The Workplace Ombudsman has a statutory agency of workplace inspectors and other staff assisting with performance of specific compliance functions set out in the Workplace Relations Act.

INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS
Each branch of the Australian Hotels Association has its own industrial relations department which services the industrial relations needs of their state members.

The major functions of our industrial relations departments are to:

  • Provide industrial relations advice to members on such topics as wage and penalty rates, annual leave and general award information;
  • Represent members in industrial relations, discrimination (or similar) tribunals;
  • Provide relevant human resources training sessions;
  • Assist members to negotiate enterprise or workplace agreements;
  • Provide guidance material including sample employment contracts and policies;
  • Keep members updated of industrial related issues by way of regular articles in monthly journals as well as regular information bulletins.

Award Coverage
The AHA has 8,500 members across Australia which employ approximately 300,000 employees. Many employees are employed under a federal or state award, depending on the state concerned. The award with the largest coverage is the Hospitality Industry – Accommodation, Hotels, Resorts and Gaming Award 1998 which applies in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South East Queensland. Strategy & Direction
Industrial relations strategy and direction for the Hotel Industry is set by the AHA’s National Executive at its quarterly meetings. This strategy is implemented by the AHA’s National Industrial Relations Manager. The AHA also uses its political networks for this purpose.

Affiliations
The AHA is a member of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Australia’s largest and most representative business organisation. AHA is a National Partner of the Office of the Employment Advocate and can assist hoteliers in negotiating an Australian Workplace Agreement.
